How They Actually Work (The Architecture Matters)

These three tools look similar from the outside. They all use LLMs to help you write code. But they’re architecturally different in ways that change everything about how you use them.

The downside: you have to leave VS Code. For some developers, that’s a dealbreaker. Your extensions, your customized setup, your muscle memory — some of it transfers (it’s a VS Code fork, after all), but not all of it. Claude Code is a terminal agent. No editor. No GUI. You type a natural language instruction in your terminal, and Claude Code reads your files, writes code, runs commands, executes tests, and commits changes — autonomously. Claude Code: $20/month for Claude Pro, which includes Claude Code access. The per-token cost is higher than Copilot but lower than Cursor’s effective rate for heavy users. For autonomous tasks, the time savings make the ROI obvious — if Claude Code saves you two hours of work per week, that’s $100+ of developer time for a $20 tool.

Don’t just check if the tests pass — check if the approach is right.

Who Should Use What

After six months with all three, here’s my actual recommendation.

Use Copilot if you’re happy with your editor setup, you primarily write pattern-based code, and you want the lowest friction possible. It’s the Toyota Camry of AI coding tools — reliable, affordable, does what you need without drama.

Use Cursor if you work on large codebases, you need multi-file awareness, and you’re willing to switch editors for a more integrated experience. It’s the best tool for developers who spend most of their day navigating complex systems.

Use Claude Code if you have well-defined tasks that take hours of focused work, you have good test coverage, and you’re comfortable reviewing autonomous changes. It’s the most powerful tool on this list — and the one that requires the most discipline to use well.

Use two of them if you’re a senior developer shipping production code daily. The combination I’ve settled on: Claude Code for autonomous tasks and heavy refactors, plus Cursor for interactive development and code exploration. Copilot stays installed as a fallback for quick autocomplete when I’m in VS Code.

The Bottom Line

Six months ago, the AI coding tool landscape felt confusing. Now it feels clear: these tools aren’t competing for the same job. Copilot speeds up your typing. Cursor understands your codebase. Claude Code does your work.

The question isn’t which one is “best.” It’s which mode of AI assistance matches how you work. If you’re writing a lot of new code from patterns you know, Copilot. If you’re navigating and modifying complex existing code, Cursor. If you need a task done and you’d rather describe it than do it, Claude Code.
